At least five people died tonight in an accident in a coal mine in the east of the Czech Republic, which also caused about a dozen wounded, while eight miners are missing, Radio Prague reported.
The incident, caused by a methane explosion about 800 meters deep, took place late Thursday at the CSM mine, located near the city of Karviná, about 300 kilometers east of Prague.
The injured, including one in critical condition, have been transferred to the Fire Clinic of the University Hospital of Ostrava, said a spokesman for the state company OKD, to which the mine belongs.
The majority of the victims are of Polish nationality.
The explosion devastated large areas of the mine.
The rescue teams continued to search for victims and possible survivors.
