At least 16 dead from alcohol consumption in the Mexican state of Jalisco



At least 16 people died from consuming 96-degree alcohol and 16 more had symptoms of intoxication in the western Mexican state of Jalisco, the Mexican state of Jalisco reported Tuesday.

The deaths and cases of poisoning were registered between April 25 and 28 in various communities in the municipalities of MAzamitla, Tamazuila, without being related or having occurred in the same event, the Jalisco government said in a statement.

Apparently alcohol was brought to these communities from the state of Michoacán, where poisoning cases have also occurred and the health problem began to register on Saturday, April 25, they said.

Symptoms of those intoxicated were blurred vision, loss of vision, severe abdominal pain, shortness of breath, and seizures.

The Jalisco Emergency Medical Attention System (SAMU) was responsible for the helicopter transfer of a total of 15 men and a woman with symptoms of intoxication to hospitals in the Guadalajara metropolitan area, authorities said.

They confirmed that two patients have been discharged and two others are in a serious health condition.

The Jalisco State Attorney General's Office announced the opening of an investigation folder to determine the causes of the deaths and poisonings in the municipalities of Mazamitla and Tamazula.

After the incident, the Jalisco health secretary issued an alert to the health authorities in the Jalisco and Michoacán region in the possible presence of more cases of alcohol consumption of 96 degrees.

Health inspectors were deployed in the area to investigate the presence of more cases of this type, and ordered the suspension of the sale of alcohol in various communities in the municipalities indicated, and the distributor was asked to suspend its activities.

Likewise, it was ordered to remove the bottles of alcohol from the shelves of local businesses and samples were collected and sent to the laboratory for analysis, authorities said.
