Astrud Gilberto, the voice of 'The Girl from Ipanema', dies

The 'bossa nova' has been orphaned. The Brazilian singer Astrud Evangelina Weinert, better known as Astrud Gilberto, died last Monday night at the age of 83, as reported by her granddaughter and also singer Sofía Gilberto on her Instagram profile.

«Astrud was the real girl who brought the bossa nova of Ipanema to the world. She was the pioneer and the best. At the age of 22, she gave voice to the English version of 'Garota de Ipanema' and she gained international fame”, Sofia recalled, about her grandmother, who was the wife of João Gilberto, another music figure.

The official account of the artist has also communicated the news with this message: «With deep sadness we come to announce the death of our dear and beloved Astrud, who passed away on the night of June 5, 2023. Our most sincere condolences to the family, friends and fans in this difficult time. May they find comfort in the memories and love she left behind."

At the age of 22, she gave voice to the English version of 'Garota de Ipanema' and gained international fame. The song, a bossa nova anthem, became the second most performed in the world. She will also be remembered for the interpretation of songs like 'Day by day', 'Agua de beber', 'Fly me to the moon', 'The shadow of your smile' or 'Gentle rain', among many others.
