Apple deactivates FaceTime group calls due to a security error | Technology

Apple has deactivated the group call function in its service of calls and video calls over the FaceTime network from the server, completely canceling the possibility of using this feature in millions of iPhone phones, iPad tablets and Mac computers after discovering a large security breach that threatens the privacy of its users.

Is a bug embarrassing for the company, since it is a problem of design of the tool, which could have been used for days until the failure has been discovered on the night of this past Monday.

The error, introduced with the latest version of the iOS operating system, allows a person to add himself or herself to the conversation, tricking the application, which thinks there is a call in progress, to hear all the sound picked up by the microphone of the device being called. In addition, if the receiver of the call touches the off button or the volume button, the video captured by the front camera is also retransmitted.

The security hole was discovered this Monday, the 28th, Information Privacy Day, in which Tim Cook wrote in his Twitter account“We must continue to fight for the kind of world we want to live in. On this Privacy Day we must all continue to improve and strengthen privacy, the dangers are real and the consequences are very important.”

Apple has taken just a few hours to deactivate the function from the server, waiting for it to deploy an update for all iOS users to correct this bug this week.

“FaceTime’s error is a serious violation of privacy that puts New Yorkers at risk,” said Andrew Cuomo, governor of New York State. “In light of this ruling, I encourage New Yorkers to disable their FaceTime application until a solution is available, and I urge Apple to publish it without delay.”

If you are looking for an alternative to FaceTime, there are alternatives out there including the free no registration video chat service Online Video Call which might be a good temporary solution as it allows free group video calls from desktop, mobile and tablet devices.
