'Anti-bullfighting' reflections of a party pooper in need of emotion | Blog The bull, by the horns

Julian López was walking, The Juli, On May 28, in the Plaza de Aranjuez, giving passes as willful as they were lacking in grace to a crippled and amorphous bullfighter of Garcigrande, while the public showed a face of supine boredom and applauded without enthusiasm at the end of each round. The director of the band, infected by the grayish atmosphere, had no better idea than to accompany the work of the bullfighter with the soundtrack of the film La Misión, and the celebration acquired a strange and surprising funerary tinge.

The same thing happened a few minutes later to Manzanares, with an animal of the same ilk, and the same face on the lines, but this time the notes of El Concierto de Aranjuez were heard.

El Juli protested at the time and with good reason, the musician of the baton also heard the protests of some spectators, which made it possible for Ureña to act to the sounds of a pasodoble, although his opponent was another invalid sheep.

The three bullfighters sang the qualities? of the bulls and how much they had enjoyed! in front of them.

It's not possible. Either all three lied shamelessly or they are considerably less intelligent than they are supposed to. They are in the heights by their own merits; They, better than anyone, know when their bullfighting reaches the stretches, and they feel, before anyone else, the tingle of emotion or the sadness of boredom

The figures, most of them very veteran, have amortized everything they carried inside in their already distant youth

Well, in Aranjuez there were no bulls, no bullfighting, no emotion. And El Juli, Manzanares and Ureña knew it.

What were they painting there, then, in that sad caricature of modern bullfighting? Is that the party that they want to promote in this society so complex and so far, at times, from the bullfighting show?

What happened in Aranjuez is just one example. The same film was screened the next day in Navalcarnero, with an infumable confinement of Juan Pedro Domecq for the happy reappearance of the long-suffering Gonzalo Caballero. And twenty-four hours later, again in Aranjuez, with bulls from Núñez del Cuvillo lacking in trapío and seriousness, against which Morante, Luque and Roca Rey crashed.

It is not necessary to add that, both in Aranjuez and Navalcarnero, the picadors were nothing more than stone guests, since a third of the rods is practically disappeared, and it seems that forever.

One more note: What happened at the San Isidro de Vistalegre fair? It happened that there was a general desolation in the lines. Why?

There has been a lot of talk about high prices and fear of the virus, and little about a tired crowd of very popular bullfighters next to the same ranches as always.

El Juli, on May 28, in Aranjuez, asked the music band to change the score.

El Juli, on May 28, in Aranjuez, asked the music band to change the score.

In short, there are at least two serious problems, among others, and a fatal consequence:

1.- The so-called figures, those who are called to pull the car, face supposedly shaved animals, raised exclusively for the task of crutch, bonancibles, outcast, pitiful, sick or who knows ...

2.- Those same figures, the vast majority of them very veteran, have long since amortized everything they carried inside in their distant youth. They have been installed in comfort, they are very predictable and do not arouse illusion.

Final sequel: the bullfighting festival suffers a drain from spectators that seriously threatens its future.

The journalist Javier Lorenzo commented a few days ago in The Salamanca Gazette that "the recently completed San Isidro has been a reality check to demonstrate the box office pull." "Not a single figure", he added, "has managed to fill the 5,400 available seats to which were reduced, due to the limitations of the covid, the 15,000 of the Vistalegre Palace."

It will be necessary to conclude, then, that bullfighters will not be able to continue charging the same as before the pandemic if they are not able to finish the role at the box office. The emoluments of those who depend on the public are subject to their ability to gather crowds. If resources are not generated, high wages cannot be demanded. There is the case of the stars of the soccer firmament.

Is it that there are no more bulls in the field than those of Garcigrande and Juan Pedro Domecq?

Another Salamanca journalist, Paco Cañamero, maintains on his blog Digital gazebo that "the party cannot continue to be installed in its obsolete structure", and that bullfighting must outline a new bullfighting, "whose business approaches in little or nothing should resemble those before the pandemic, which led bullfighting to a critical moment" .

It's true. The bullfighting party was already in serious trouble when the virus appeared, but they are still there, reinforced by the prolonged drought of the pandemic.

The bullfighters have repeated that "there is a desire for bulls", and it is not true; Perhaps, because Cañamero is right and a new bullfighting is necessary in line with the nascent normality after a desert year.

Has someone sat down to design the bullfighting festival of that future that is already here? Has anyone thought of any measure to stop the flight of spectators, and recover the lost emotion?

Has any bullfighter raised his voice against the inexplicable closure of the Plaza de Las Ventas, defended, until now, only by fans?

Does it all consist of the mimetic repetition of the forms of management of the past?

Is it that there are no more bulls in the field than those of Garcigrande and Juan Pedro Domecq?

If another bullfighting is not possible, the new normal may be your death sentence; Different results cannot be expected with the systematic application of the same methods that have survived in this festival over time, nor can situations of the present be faced with solutions from the past.

From all of the above, it could be concluded that the fans are sending clear and forceful messages: they want new faces, they demand that the bull regain its prominence, that the lost emotion reappear, that the show is more dynamic and the business is governed by business rules of the XXI century. Everything else, even if it is Morante who rejects modernity and longs for a return to stale tradition, is nothing more than the edge of a bottomless precipice.

The posters for the León fair, managed by Casa Matilla, have just been seen. On Saturday June 26, Morante, El Juli and Manzanares, with bulls from Garcigrande; and the next day, Pablo Hermoso de Mendoza and a heads-up between Ponce and El Fandi, with bulls from Hnos. García Jiménez.

Is it possible to gather a trio of bullfighters and bulls more predictable than the first? Has the businessman stopped to think if there is a Leonese interested in a heads-up between the Valencian and the Granada-born?

And two final buttons.

Roca Rey recently refused to allow Movistar TV cameras to broadcast his performance in the Plaza de Aranjuez; and Alejandro Talavante is missing because, apparently, he is not convinced to fight before a reduced capacity. As if Rafa Nadal, as an example, was not known throughout the world thanks to television, and for going out to a tennis court as soon as circumstances allowed.

The very special moment that bullfighting suffers requires a complete nude and absolute sincerity before the cracked columns that support it collapse.

So these reflections are worth anti-bullfighting from an amateur party pooper in need of a good dose of excitement.
