Angela Cremonte: “People of culture are not lazy people who get up late”


Has it been hard to start your first literary adventure?

When I sat down to write, I had distanced myself from the things that hurt me … Yes, it has been an intense process but not hard. The world of acting has taught me to work hard to achieve goals … That served to harden my skin.

What kind of pain are you referring to?

Everyone lies at night is an autofiction and although the problems that I relate are being told by someone else, those feelings are not alien to my existence. In this novel I go with my heart first; I’ve undressed in front of a lot of strangers. I’m going point blank. There are chapters in which I describe scenes that ignite my heart and others in which I focus on much more painful aspects … The book is an invitation to talk about what hurts us.

In the lie and the night that are tied in the title of the book it gives the impression that he wants to hide things …

… When you get into bed at night and turn off the light, the furniture starts to creak. There is no longer any lie because although a person may continue to lie to himself, it is in that loneliness when it is found out that he is not telling the truth … The feeling is similar to that of the moment in which you decide to tear off one of those plasters that protect a wound : when you pull it it hurts, but before that happens it has already fulfilled its function, right? The lie protects us and one is not always willing to hear the truth because they know that their pain is much more intense.

All families are revisited by their ghosts and hide some “dirty cloth” in the closet, is this still a story of family secrets?

These taboos are part of the family idiosyncrasy and it is always difficult to put them on the table because they make knots that are complicated to untie.

Also, is it easier to talk about the knots of others?

Of course, that costs us much less … Those family taboos puncture the bone and are usually connected with fears and pains that were generated in childhood. It’s fun talking about them, but when you do, it’s liberating.

What are we going to find in ‘Everyone lies at night’?

A story that will be familiar to us … An autofiction that I place in my family, which is not different from any other, that is, I have built a metaphor of something that is very close to our lives … I have looked to mine with more inquisitive eyes to tell this plot.

And what did you find?

I took a real event that happened to a member of my family as a starting point, I put distance with that fact and sucked the part that I wanted to tell. The starter is my great-great-grandmother, the mother of my great-great-grandmother and the last woman of my family link that I met … Her name was Eufrosine and she was born in a very poor town in northern Italy in 1856 … She had them so orthogonal as to get into on a boat as a girl and flee to America from misery and hunger. It is the story of an exile who seeks to offer her life a second chance and that later linked with the arrival of my parents from Argentina to Madrid, already in the 70s of the last century. In this novel I not only fictionalize my childhood but also the fears of many Argentines who locked themselves in a bathroom, not to look for a contact lens but in search of their identity …

Are we going to find an Ángela Cremonte very different from the one we saw in ‘Paco’s men’, ‘Cable girls’ or ‘The sleeping voice’?

No … In the world of television or cinema I have only shown a part of who I am and here is another. This is a statement of intent about the things that flow inside me and that I want to tell through the pages of this novel.

How do you expect your readers to receive it?

I do not know … I hope in the best possible way because I have put my heart in telling this story. When you put your soul into what you do, even if you are not perfect, a spark appears in the hearts of others. I am an emotional and sensitive actress and that is also in my writing. My wish is that you make the most of this sensory journey.

Are you coming to stay in the literary industry?

Writing this book does not mean that I have to distance myself from my acting profession … Everyone knows that it is not easy to publish a novel, but I have been writing for years. One of the problems of this society is the use that labels want to be given to order things … Although it is not the only one that affects the world of culture.

What do you mean?

To the discredit with which some people treat artists. People of culture are not lazy people who get up late. Creating culture in this country is a complex process and, at times, highly criticized.
