The Valencian artist Ana Penyas has been awarded this Tuesday with the National Comic Award 2018 by the graphic novel We are all good. The prize awarded by the Ministry of Education, Culture and Sports, is endowed with 20,000 euros. The jury has chosen this work, the first graphic novel by the author, for "rescuing, from a family history, the voice of a silenced generation; for the innovation and freshness of the graphic staging, as well as the ability to integrate comic and other media resources. "
The cartoon was born when Ana Penyas was about to finish Fine Arts in Valencia. A teacher asked that they make a four-page comic book. Penyas had never made a comic book. "He invited us to tell an anecdote about our life. On my return from a visit to my grandmother Maruja, who started with Parkinson's, I was very sensitive and I came up with the story. " He then enriched the project with the incorporation of biographical pieces of Herminia with which he completed a fanzine. And finally, pushed by an editor who later became disinterested, he began to broaden the project, which would eventually present the contest in 2016.
Penyas is an illustrator of strong commitment, both with feminism and with historical memory. A few months ago he published Mexique (Books of the Red Fox), about the 456 republican children who embarked in Bordeaux to Mexico in 1937. And these days has just gone out to the street In Transition (Barlin Books), an illustrated album that collects fragments of a time now in question.
