At least twelve health workers at the Basurto hospital, in Bilbao, have tested positive for coronavirus after the appearance of an outbreak in the dialysis area of the center, located in the Jado pavilion, as medical sources have confirmed to this newspaper after the union SATSE will warn of this situation in the Basque Parliament. It is the second focus of hospital infections in a few days in Bizkaia after the appearance of another in Gorliz, where 20% of the patients and 10% of the workforce have contracted Sars-Cov-2, which means around 70 cases.
A coronavirus outbreak affects 20% of the patients and 10% of the health workers at the Gorliz hospital, in Bizkaia
As it is a ‘clean’ area, as the areas where patients with COVID-19 are not treated are defined, the Dialysis staff worked until now with surgical masks. Now the use of FFP2 protections has been decreed, with greater filtering capacity, according to the sources consulted. Those affected are four nurses, seven assistants and a trainee. There is a positive patient, but it is unknown if it is related to the focus. Tests have been carried out on the 33 professionals of the Hemodialysis unit. The service continues to operate normally but the facilities will be disinfected this weekend. The nursing union (SATSE) has demanded adequate protection measures for the high community transmission that exists in Euskadi and that there be “close surveillance” of the outbreak to “safeguard the health” of health workers and patients and prevent future infections.
In June there was already another hospital outbreak in Basurto. Then it reached 46 cases among professionals and patients and two of those infected died with COVID-19. It was highlighted then as a key factor to control the expansion of the coronavirus that Basurto is a special hospital due to its composition, since it is divided into numerous wards. Specifically, there are 17 buildings. In the Jado there are the specialties General Surgery, Urology, Nephrology and Teaching and Research.
