An explosion occurred early this morning in an arsenal of the Ukrainian Army located in the north of the country caused the detonation in chain of the projectiles stored in its facilities without the occurrence of casualties, reported the General Staff (EMG) of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
"At 0700 hours (04.00 GMT) the intensity of the explosions was three per second," said the EMG statement posted on its Facebook page.
The press release states that the incident, whose causes are unknown, has not caused fatalities or injuries among military personnel or the civilian population.
The president of Ukraine, Petro Poroshenko, called on the heads of Defense and Security to inform him of the situation created by the explosions in the arsenal, located next to the city of Ichnia, 100 kilometers northeast of Kiev.
"The government has been instructed to provide all the necessary assistance to the population," the spokesman for the Ukrainian Presidency, Sviatoslav Tsegolko, wrote on Twitter.
According to the Ukrainian press, the arsenal where the accident occurred is one of the largest in the country, occupies an area of 628 hectares and contains between 130,000 and 150,000 tons of projectiles, from ammunition for small arms to rockets.
The Military Prosecutor's Office of Ukraine opened a criminal case for "negligence in the fulfillment of military duty resulting in serious consequences", an offense punishable by up to 7 years in prison.
