An earthquake of magnitude 5.1 leaves some 130,000 people without water in Colombia



An earthquake of magnitude 5.1 on the Richter scale was felt this Saturday in several regions of Colombia, with no victims reported at the moment, and left the municipality of Chía, near Bogotá and where some 130,000 people live, without water. .

“We are presented with an emergency due to an earthquake (…) we have been working since early because here near the pedestrian bridge of La Sabana there is the damage of a 30-inch mother tube, which will leave a a large percentage of the municipality, not to say entirely, “said the mayor of Chía, Luis Carlos Segura.

In a bulletin, the Colombian Geological Service (SGC) stated that the earthquake occurred at 00.55 local time (5.55 GMT), had a depth of 149 kilometers and that the epicenter was the municipality of Los Santos, in the department of Santander, located in the northeast of the country.

The earthquake was felt by inhabitants of 22 of the 32 departments of Colombia: Antioquia, Atlántico, Bolívar, Boyacá, Caldas, Casanare, Cauca, Cesar, Córdoba, Cundinamarca, Huila, La Guajira, Magdalena, Meta, Norte de Santander, Putumayo, Quindío, Risaralda, Santander, Sucre, Tolima and Valle del Cauca.

The mayor of Chía assured that to guarantee the supply while they fix the damage to the pipeline, tanker trucks loaded with water from the neighboring town of Cajicá will reach that municipality.

“We call on citizens to collaborate with us, to understand that we are in the framework of (the pandemic of) COVID-19 and that the use of water must be rationalized,” he said.

The official also stated that a pedestrian bridge that connects the Universidad de la Sabana with the Centro Chía shopping center collapsed due to the tremor.

In this sense, Nicolás García, Governor of Cundinamarca, department in which the municipality is located, said in his social networks that he has already instructed the Special Administrative Unit for Disaster Risk Management (UAEGRD) “to be in charge of this situation, offering the water supply with tank cars for the community of Chía while the service is restored. “
