An earthquake of magnitude 4.9 shakes the Peruvian region of Ica, without causing damage

An earthquake of magnitude 4.9 shook the Ica region of southern Peru today, with no reports of personal or material damage, official sources said.

According to the report of the Geophysical Institute of Peru (IGP) the earthquake was felt at 19.13 hours (00.13 GMT on Saturday), with an epicenter 44 kilometers west of the coastal city of Pisco and a depth of 29 kilometers in the Pacific Ocean .

In Pisco it reached an intensity of III-IV, which caused scenes of panic among the citizens, since that town was largely destroyed in 2007 by an earthquake of magnitude 7.9 that left more than 500 dead.

Peru is located in the so-called Pacific Ring of Fire, an area where more than 85% of global seismic activity is recorded.
