The e-commerce giant Amazon announced that starting this Monday it will put new customers of its Fresh and Market home grocery delivery services on the waiting list, unable to cope with the increase in demand due to COVID -19.
The firm in Seattle (Washington state, USA) said in a statement that this is a temporary measure and that as its capacity increases in the coming weeks, it will issue new “invitations” for those who are in the waiting list can access the service.
Thus, Amazon currently prioritizes its existing Fresh and Market customers, two services that allow weekly purchases of fresh products and other groceries to be made online and which, as a result of the confinement measures decreed in large part of the world, have been overwhelmed in recent weeks.
In recent days, several people turned to social networks to explain that they were having problems making their orders through Amazon Fresh and Market -whose delivery usually occurs in a matter of a few hours-, since all the options for delivery schedules were already busy.
The company headed by Jeff Bezos supplies these services from its own warehouses and, in the cases of the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom, also from the Whole Foods supermarket chain, which was acquired by Amazon in 2017.
The Amazon business continues to grow in times of the COVID-19 pandemic and the company also announced on Monday the hiring of 75,000 people in the United States, in addition to the 100,000 it has already incorporated since the start of the crisis.
Since numerous governments and local agencies around the world began issuing confinement orders to deal with the coronavirus pandemic, internet commerce has exploded, and Amazon, a prominent leader in the sector, has been one of the most benefited firms .
In parallel to the historical increase in business volume these days, the company has been the target of criticism from employees and politicians who consider that, despite benefiting from the pandemic, it is not doing enough to guarantee safety and good health of its workers, who continue to go to their jobs in many cases, they assure, without the necessary preventive measures.
