After 27 years of running the
University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (ULPGC) already has
an alumni association Alumnia non-profit organization that was presented today with the intention that the "link between the university and society" be "permanent"said its president, Sixto Martin.

The businesswoman Maica Gil, based in the United States, and the scientist and disseminator Javier SantaOlalla will be the first "ambassadors" of this association.

«
I expect three things from this association: Diversity, inclusion and intersectionality», said Maica Gil in an intervention recorded on video. “It is an honor to be an Alumni ambassador, and a great responsibility. Enjoy the university because it is a lifelong bond”, added Santaolalla later.

Add equity to college

The association, of which some thirty former students of the ULPGC are now part,
began to forge in 2017 at the impulse of the current president of the
Social Council of the ULPGCAngel Tristan Pepper.

For this one, there is
two types of associations of former students of a university, those that meet once a year for a field trip and those that add value to the university. Tristán asked that Alumni be the second model, and urged the association to even seek additional funds for the ULPGC and collaborate to "sell" certain projects that interest the university.
"Now they have the most difficult part, to establish the roadmap" of Alumni, said Tristán.

The presentation, which took place in the Nexo building on the Tafira campus, was also attended by the
General Director of Universities of the Government of the Canary IslandsManuel Ramirez. “This is a magnificent opportunity to continue doing ULPGC”, he told them.

Be a “role model” for the student body

For his part, the rector of the ULPGC, Lluís Serra, pointed out that it was a day of "pride and joy" for the presentation of Alumni.
He asked the association for three things, he said. «Link, responsibility and cooperation».

The first because, through Alumni, people who have already graduated will be helped to “remain united to this house”. The second because those who make up
the association, in which people who have not studied at the ULPGC can participate, “They should be role models for our students. The image of what they can become» and the third because it will allow teamwork with the Social Council and transfer all this to society.

Serra also made two requests to them, not to forget that they are "the best ambassadors" of the ULPGC, for which he asked them to keep the flag of the university "high" and to be the "best advisers" of the university community even in matters such as the new degree map prepared by the ULPGC. “I ask for your involvement and that they exist for many years,” he concluded.
