Alonso and his teammates win at Daytona

It will take a long time for the American public to forget the tremendous performance of Fernando Alonso in the 24 hours of Daytona. The Spaniard became the total protagonist of the race thanks to his epic comebacks, the driving on a wet track, the strong wind and very complicated conditions full of neutralizations, several suspensions of the competition and a lot of traffic with multiple runway exits. The team of Alonso, the Cadillac Minolta Konica, managed very well the 24 hours, the strategy, the refueling and the tires. His teammates, Taylor, Van der Zande and Kobayashi, made no mistakes and took the car intact to the next relay. Something that was fundamental. And so it happened, except that Alonso was present at the key moments of the race. Without a doubt, he was the 24-hour hero of Daytona because his performance on wet asphalt was infinitely superior to his rivals, many of them former F-1 pilots and most with much more experience in the championship than the Spanish driver himself.

With two hours remaining Alonso returned to the track under a heavy downpour and pressed his rival, Felipe Nars, from the second place until the Brazilian made a mistake and stopped braking. This was used by Alonso to reach the first position and not abandon it until achieving the victory. The race management decided to suspend the race in the absence of two hours to the end and, due to the storm, the suspension was final. Alonso fulfilled his dream of winning at Daytona and adds to his triumphs in Formula 1 and Le Mans the victory in this magical place for motorsport.
