Alert of the proliferation of new allergies due to the high concentration of pollen



The experts of the Institute of Science and Environmental Technology (ICTA) of the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB) warn of the proliferation of new allergies from the high concentration of pollen.

This was detailed by the center's researcher and head of the Aerobiology Network of Catalonia (XAC) Jordina Belmonte at the press conference that was held on Tuesday at the UAB campus in Cerdanyola del Vallès.

The analysis of the situation indicates that there are peaks of pollen concentration that can turn non-allergic people into allergic, so they can experience for the first time the sensation of the known attacks that are experienced, especially during the spring.

According to Belmonte, they can experience accentuated outbreaks, which later would be less, given that the pollination of some of the species that exist in our country has been started for weeks.

The vegetation responds to the rainfall that occurred last year, in autumn, and this spring has already started with strong pollination of cypresses, now with poplars, parietaria, and later grasses, "said Belmonte.

For all these reasons, Belmonte points out that all possible precautions have to be taken, given that the data suggest that pollination in high concentrations could affect people who have never had allergies before.

"It may seem that they have had a cold, but in those cases it is very possible that the high concentrations have caused them to have become allergic", added the UAB expert.

In this way, the most allergenic elements in the atmosphere of Catalonia are the Cupresáceas, with 23%; the shade banana, with 10%; the parietaria, with 6%; the olive tree, with 5%; the grasses, with 4%; and the chenopodiaceae, with 3%.

Belmonte has also highlighted the aggressiveness of certain reactions, specifically in the case of the shade banana, which with a presence of 10%, affects 39% of the population, and the olive tree, which with 5% affects 36% .

With regard to the territorial impact of Catalonia, most of the data available correspond to the Barcelona area and its area of ​​influence, which is why Belmonte highlights the decline of banana pollen shade on the coast and the increase in areas of the interior such as Lleida and Vielha.

According to Belmonte, climate change is causing an increase in the atmospheric concentrations of tree pollen in the last 25 years and, on the contrary, a decrease in the amount of herbs.

In this way, the way to calm the effects of the high concentration of pollen in the environment happens through the arrival of rains, which would lower that volume in the air to the ground, so that it would not produce respiratory affectations.

For its part, the specialist in allergology of the Pediatric Unit of the University Hospital Vall d'Hebron and Secretary of the Respiratory Committee of the Catalan Society of Allergology and Clinical Immunology (SCAIC), Teresa Garriga, has warned that they are not respecting the parameters established by WHO.

In this sense, he pointed out that allergists are lacking in public health, a specialty that is below those that would be necessary in global health care, highlighting the case of Girona, where there is only one specialist in this modality for 750,000 people.
