The works council of the Alcoa plant in San Cibrao (Lugo) has registered this Saturday, October 16, its request for the Justice to suspend precautionary the Employment Regulation File submitted by the company’s management. This is explained in a statement by the three unions that are part of it, Commissions Obreiras, CIG and UGT, after transferring the documentation to the Superior Court of Xustiza de Galicia.
Raül Blanco, Secretary General for Industry: “We have been intervening for many months so that Alcoa sells the plant and does not close it down”
The representation of the 524 affected workers also demands “the intervention or judicial administration” of the aluminum factory by the State Society of Industrial Participations (SEPI). This request is in line with the actions of the central government, which also supports the Xunta de Galicia, or with the motion approved in Congress last week at the initiative of the BNG.
The precautionary measures also include ordering the company “not to start with the stoppage of the vats and, consequently, not to execute individual dismissals until there is a final judgment.”
The American multinational got up from the negotiating table that it held for a month with the administrations and the works council after not accepting the offer to purchase the Liberty fund. As explained to elDiario.es the secretary general of Industry of the ministry, Raül Blanco, Alcoa’s strategy is to eliminate competition in Europe for its factories in China or Saudi Arabia, which makes the deal difficult.
