The Minister of Foreign Affairs, José Manuel
Albares, yesterday avoided clarifying whether the turn of the Government of Spain on the Sahara entails any commitment from Morocco that affects the Canary Islands in terms of control of migratory flow or guarantees of territorial integrity, although he recognized that the archipelago is "a very important part" of the bilateral relationship.

«The interests of Spain and especially the interests of the Canary Islands will always be defended», guaranteed the head of Spanish diplomacy in response to the NC deputy, Pedro Quevedo, who warned in the plenary session of Congress about the risks of not putting a brake on Morocco's expansionist policy.

On the eve of Pedro Sánchez's visit to Rabat, who is today invited by King Mohamed VI to the Ramadan break dinner, the minister
Albares has not left the script marked since the support of Spain for the autonomy plan for the Sahara was known as the "most serious, realistic and credible" way to solve a conflict that has been entrenched for 47 years.

Faced with the demand for explanations from Quevedo, who accused the Executive of having abandoned international legality, the Minister of Foreign Affairs limited himself in his speech to reiterating that the Spanish position is "within the framework of the United Nations, with the charter of the United Nations and with the resolutions of the United Nations Security Council”, giving full support to the new special envoy of the UN Secretary General for the Sahara to reach a solution accepted by the two parties in dispute.

CRITICISM OF THE GOVERNMENT

  • Turn.
Quevedo (NC) accuses the Government of abandoning international legality for supporting the autonomy plan.

  • waters.
The nationalist deputy warns of the risk of not putting a brake on Morocco's expansionist policy.

  • Inaction.
Oramas (CC) criticizes that Spain does not bring the unilateral expansion of Moroccan maritime space to the UN.

  • Visit.
Sánchez travels to Rabat today to meet with King Mohamed VI and stage the new bilateral stage.

The NC deputy considers that Albares' response "is a shame" that reflects the "capability" of the Spanish Government in the face of the "blackmail of Morocco" and the "betrayal" of the Saharawi people.

"With support for the Moroccan proposal for an autonomy plan
Spain is denying recognition of the right to self-determination of the Sahara protected by the UN in its resolutions and therefore it is situated outside international legality, because it works so that Morocco appropriates a territory that is not its own”, he points out.

Quevedo also recalled that the current Minister of the Interior, Fernando Grande Marlaska, when he was president of the National High Court, recognized in 2014 that Spain continues to be
de jure the administering power of Western Sahara, "something that you have illegitimately renounced," he stated.

Regarding the consequences of the agreement with Morocco, the nationalist parliamentarian maintains that whatever the agreed considerations that the Government has not yet revealed, are "unacceptable" because they are the result of "blackmailing pressure" from Rabat.

“Canaries know well not only the blackmail with immigration, but also the expansionist policy of Morocco”he pointed out, "especially after the unilateral actions to appropriate Canary territorial waters, with a very weak response from the Government of Spain, which we ask to rectify," he added.

The CC deputy, Ana Oramas, also referred to the expansionist aspirations of Rabat yesterday, during the debate on the non-law proposal (PNL) of United We Can, EH, Bildu and ERC on the Sahara that will be voted on today, in which support for the UN resolutions is ratified and to which the PSOE has announced that it will be added if the text is not modified with amendments.

"Now we understand why Spain did not file a complaint with the UN when the Moroccan parliament approved two laws, not only on the waters of the Sahara, but also those that are in conflict with Canary waters"he explained, "and why when it became known that the FAO recognizes part of the Canary waters as Moroccan, the Government said that it was not relevant," he added.

The CC spokeswoman criticized that the PSOE "dares to also say that the agreement is good for the Canary Islands" despite the position against the autonomous Parliament.
