Regino Hernández (Ceuta, 29 years old) takes a break to attend the interview. It's in Germany, next to Lucas Eguibar, to participate in the Feldberg World Cup competition (which airs Eurosport on 9 and 10 February, from 9:45 to 11:30). It is almost a year since the bronze achieved in the Games of Pieonchang and Regino says that something has changed in his sport, boardercross, although there have also been some problems, especially for the lack of continuity of the "skiman" (the manager of prepare the tables)
-It just finished Solitude World Championship (Utah, USA) What happened?
-This is boardercross … Lucas [Eguibar], for example, had the bad luck that in the Olympic Games he fell in the first round and he was totally out, and now in the World Cup it has happened to me. The qualifying day was the fifth fastest of the whole circuit, in the quali I made a mistake that left me a little behind, but I knew we were very fast, it was going down super well, but a bad support left me out . A bitch, the truth, but hey, I'm happy because the coaches of other teams and other runners came to support me and told me what a pity that I had fallen, that they saw me super fast. That, although it was not a good result, makes you see that you are there, at the level of the best, and that in any race you can be on the podium.
And think: how unfair is sport!
-Well, a bit, let's see, the World Cups are every two years, I've had enough and I've been accumulating a bit of bad luck, I've suffered falls by myself, in the Sierra Nevada World Cup the same thing happened to me, I had the third best time and in the first round I fell twice being the fastest of my round. But it is boardercross, we know what there is, we have to get up, learn and prepare for the next race.
– How does the mind work to overcome that?
-Now I'm not with any psychologist, but at first I did have to resort to someone to give me a cable; when I was entering the elite, already among the 20 best in the world and I saw that things were not going well for me, that at the time of training I was ahead and then in the competition I did not go out, so I had to go to specialists. Now I know what this is, I try not to lash out at myself so as not to have my head with negative thinking. And, above all, there are my people, who know what this is and bring me back to reality: it is a sport in which each descent lasts a minute and at the slightest failure you can stay out. The companions also give encouragement …
-There is good vibes among you …
-Always, in the circuits we are always the same. For example, Mick Dierdoff, the one who has been world champion, the first time I saw him I do not know if he was 14 or 15 years old, that we coincided in a competition in Italy, and it was the time in which I was mostly focused on the freestyle and he too. It's my age, we get along well and I was even glad that he took that medal.
-Los Lucas is also angry, I had the medal there in the World …
-Sure … Let's see, I would have preferred if Lucas had won. He is a rival like the others, but he is a teammate, we are many days together and it is another medal that goes to Spain. It's a shame, that the final is four, and that it was he who was left without a medal.
– Has the Olympic bronze changed your life?
-Something yes, especially in sports. As a person I'm still the same, I'm still doing the same, but it's true that now people in Spain know more about boardercross, they start to get interested. As in all sports, when a Spaniard is up he is given a ball; yes it is true that now being Lucas and I, both well positioned, is given something more hype. It's not football, but it has changed.
– After all, there was some problem like the one of the «skiman». What happened?
– Was it a matter of money? Because I guess with the successes more money has gone into the Federation.
-If I tell you the truth, I do not know for sure. I believe that according to the results, the CSD gives more money so that we can continue traveling all the equipment; If it's much more or less, I do not control that issue. This year we have been hanging a bit with the theme of "skiman", but I do not want anyone to misunderstand me, that Hilario [Sánchez] is showing that it is a great "skiman", the tables are being fast, we are making the best times within the circuit, but of course, it is still someone without experience. The perfect thing would have been that he was with another person, and that later only Hilario would stay.
-Back to your sport. How do you think you have to improve on the staff?
– There is always the possibility of improvement. I think that perfection does not exist. I'm this year, for example, very good reaction speed at the start, is something that has always been very good, and what I have improved is when taking the curves, positioning on the table … But you have to keep working, keep up and keep learning.
