Afers Socials questions the word ‘mena’ as ‘neologisme de l’any’

As every year around this time, the Institut d'Estudis Catalans (IEC) and the Pompeu Fabra University (UPF) propose ten new words to popular vote. The winner will enter the normative dictionary elaborated by the IEC with great certainty.

Yesterday the ten neologisms of this year were known, which the UPF Observatory of Neology proposes in the first instance: animalist, climatic emergency, exoplanet, mena, pactòmetre, residu zero, trap, umami, vermuteria, xipar.

The document of the Department, the Consell de l'Audiovisual de Catalunya and the Col·legi de Periodistes de Catalunya considers that ‘mena’ is “a stigmatized term”

One of them,
ore
, lexicalized acronym of “Unaccompanied foreign minor”, has been questioned by the Afers Socials area of the Department of Treball, Afers Socials and Famílies. From their Twitter account @aferssocialscat, this morning they have published: “We ask you to reconsider and withdraw the‘ mena ’proposal. It is a denigrating, stigmatizing and dehumanizing way of referring to migrated children without family references. ”

Just last November the document was published
Recommendations on the informative treatment of the infancy and protected guardianship per administration
, agreed by the Department with the Consell de l'Audiovisual de Catalunya and the Col·legi de Periodistes de Catalunya.

The ten neologisms of this year: animalist, climatic emergency, exoplanet, mena, pactòmetre, residu zero, trap, umami, vermuteria, xipar

In it you can read: “A quick query in any internet search engine with the terms minors, guardianship or ORE –Acronym of unaccompanied foreign minor–, for three examples, refers us to information that normally has a negative character and that associate children, adolescents or young people under guardianship with situations of conflict, delinquency, criminality or even trafficking in human beings or prostitution ”.

In the same document, it is defined
ore
: “Acronym of unaccompanied foreign minor. It refers to foreign girls and boys who do the migration processes alone and alone. Since it is a stigmatized term, it should be replaced by children or young people migrated alone or alone, without family references or without adult references ”.

There have been no statements from IEC or UPF.
