They received 27.3 million passengers, 92.6% of the traffic of 2019, although so far this year they still have to recover 15%
The airports of the Aena network have closed the month of August 2022 with 27,301,674 passengers, a figure that is only 7.4 percentage points away from reaching pre-pandemic levels. Therefore, 92.6% of the traffic registered in August 2019 has already been recovered, as reported by the airport manager on Monday.
In addition, 223,260 aircraft were operated, which means a recovery of 95.1% over 2019, and 78,468 tons of cargo were moved, which represents a decrease of 6.3% compared to the same month of 2019.
Of the total number of travelers registered in August, 27.2 million corresponded to commercial passengers, of which 18.4 million traveled on international flights, 12.7% less than in August 2019; and 8.8 million did so on domestic flights, 6.3% more than before the pandemic.
In the accumulated until the eighth month of 2022, a recovery of 85.3% of passenger traffic is achieved compared to the same period of 2019, so they are still almost 15% below.
From January to August 2022, 159.3 million travelers have passed through the airports of the Aena network, 1.4 million aircraft movements were registered (7.7% less than in 2019) and 651,950 tons were transported of merchandise, which means 3% less than in the same period of 2019.
Madrid, in the lead
The Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas Airport registered the highest number of passengers in the eighth month of the year with 4.9 million, which represents a decrease of 13.9% compared to August 2019. It is followed by the Josep Tarradellas Barcelona-El airports. Prat, with 4.4 million (-17.5% compared to 2019); Palma de Mallorca, with 4.1 million (-2.8%); Málaga-Costa del Sol, with 2 million (-6.9%); Alicante-Elche Miguel Hernández, with 1.5 million passengers (-10.6%); Ibiza, 1.3 million (-1.1%); and Gran Canaria, with 1 million passengers, which represents an increase of 0.8% compared to the same month of 2019.
Regarding the number of operations, the airport that reached the highest number of movements in August was Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas, with a total of 31,575 (-15% over 2019), followed by Palma de Mallorca, with 28,838 (+0, two%); Josep Tarradellas Barcelona-El Prat, with 27,779 flights (-15%); Málaga-Costa del Sol, with 15,159 (-3.1%); Ibiza, with 12,827 (+4.6%); Gran Canaria, with 9,910 (-6.6%); and Alicante-Elche Miguel Hernández, with 9,795 movements, which represents a decrease of 8.9% compared to the same month of 2019.
Regarding freight traffic, the airport that registered the highest volume of cargo during the month of August was Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas, with 43,511 tons, 1.9% less compared to the same month of 2019. It is followed by the Josep Tarradellas Airport Barcelona-El Prat, which registered 13,324 tons (+1% compared to 2019); Zaragoza, with 10,058 tons (-35.6%), and Vitoria, with 5,423 tons, which translates into 31.9% more than in the same month of 2019.
