A tropical storm in the Gulf of Mexico can be added to Dorian today

Hurricane Dorian, which is slowly moving towards Florida after having devastated the Bahamas, is not the only cause for concern in the Atlantic basin, where a tropical storm may form on Tuesday that would affect Mexico and southern Texas and there are other systems on the horizon

The "Potential Tropical Cyclone 7," as the US National Hurricane Center (NHC) calls it, is located in the Gulf of Mexico, about 200 miles (320 km) east of Mexico's La Pesca port and about 225 miles (360 km) east northeast of Tampico, also in Mexico.

The system is moving westbound at 7 miles per hour (11 km / h) with maximum sustained winds of 35 miles per hour (55 km / h), according to the first newsletter dedicated to it by the NHC.

It is expected that these conditions will be maintained throughout the day, with some strengthening of the winds, and that the meteorological "disturbance" will become a tropical storm at night.

The system may be "near or above the coast of northeastern Mexico" on Wednesday afternoon.

The probability of cyclone formation within 48 hours is one hundred percent and the same percentage applies in the five-day forecast.

According to the NHC, tropical storm conditions will reach the Mexican coast between La Pesca and Barra El Mezquital for Wednesday.

Rains of 6 to 12 inches (15 to 30 centimeters) are expected, with higher accumulations, in the Sierra Madre Oriental of Tamaulipas and Nuevo León, and 2 to 4 inches (5 to 10 cm) in southern Texas and the lower coast of that US state, with the risk of dangerous flash floods.

In addition, the NHC is monitoring a low-pressure area in the Atlantic located a few hundred miles west of the Cape Verde Islands that can become a tropical depression today, while moving northwest.

The probability of cyclone formation is 90%, both in the 48-hour and the 5-day forecast.

To make matters worse, there is a 40% chance that a low pressure system that is producing disorganized rains and thunderstorms several miles south of Bermuda becomes a tropical depression this Thursday.

Also in a couple of days, according to the NHC, a tropical wave will emerge between the African continent and Cape Verde and by the next weekend it could also take on a body of tropical depression.
