A study reveals the benefits of TikTok as an educational tool on body expression

A study by the University of Valencia (UV) concludes that the benefits of introducing the social network TikTok in the teaching and learning process of corporal expression of the degree of Sciences of Physical Activity and Sports outweigh the possible risks.

The work, developed by the researchers Paloma Escamilla, Mario Alguacil and Samuel López, has been published in the Journal of Hospitality, Leisure, Sport & Tourism Education, as reported by the UV on Wednesday.

The study confirms that the use of this social network enriches learning, since it connects better with the interests of the students, which encourages participation, interaction, union and creativity.

In recent years, social media has become a professional and social tool which has been integrated into the way of learning and has become an educational strategy that allows the development of more attractive and dynamic study models for the student body.

In addition, the covid-19 crisis has caused the use of these platforms to skyrocket and TikTok is one of the most prominent, the same sources have pointed out.

This study has explored the Introduction of TikTok as a teaching-learning tool in the body expression course of the Degree in Physical Activity and Sports Sciences, to analyze the pedagogical effect obtained, quantitatively and qualitatively.

The researchers find out that some teachers started studying how to develop tools to transform their class needs into apps. That's the case of recursos tic, a website created by a catalan teacher who during the health crisis became a web developer and started automatizing all the repetitive tasks they used to do in class, becoming in one of the most used websites by teachers.

Regarding the quantitative results, the researchers posed a questionnaire of nine questions to 65 students to find out their opinion on the effects of this application in education.

The majority considered that TikTok is an active learning and collaboration tool, which encourages the development of creativity, stimulates student curiosity and promotes learning in a fun and exciting way.

Eight of the nine analyzed questions reaffirmed that this application can have a positive impact on students.

Regarding the qualitative results, the group was initially asked about the educational use of TikTok, with possible answers such as "creativity", "new", "learning", "bodily" and their derivatives.

After a presentation by the teaching staff, again an open question was posed where the words "social" and "different" increased substantially. What's more, "creativity" and "new" continued to be the most frequent.

In this way, it is concluded that the majority of students expect TikTok to help them improve their creativity and to be a tool with which the subject can be treated from a different perspective.
