A QR code will allow the reading of Galdós’ work to the users of municipal buses and from Binter. This is one of the most outstanding measures of the new activities that will take place from February to April 2 in the framework of the commemorative program Canary Islands, the land of Galdós with which the centenary of the death of the author Grancanario is remembered.
Users of both transport companies may opt for six titles of the realistic writer that includes Necrology of a prototype, Trafalgar for young people, A journey of impressions, Electra, The mule and the ox Y Marianela.
It is a project of the cultural associations CanariaseBook and The City of Galdós “that allows downloads to be made during the journey”, in pdf, epub and audiobook and that bears the title of Traveling with Galdós.
This was stated by the Director General of Culture of the Government of the Canary Islands, Rubén Pérez Castellano, during a presentation in which he was accompanied by the Minister of Culture of the Cabildo of Gran Canaria, Guacimara Medina Pérez, and in which he advanced the activities to be carried out until Easter, date in which there will be a new presentation.
“The Ministry of Culture will intensify teacher training, work with other institutions and the creation of a more open commission in which we will include all the options to work with the community,” he said. For his part, Guacimara Medina added that “every day there are more responses to this project, as well as the desire to participate.” And he assured that this tribute will not end in 2021 since it will be “the consolidation of these activities”. The Minister of Culture stressed that “entities that want to collaborate continue to be added” and that their goal is to reach the maximum number of municipalities. Medina, highlighted the excellent response of citizens towards scheduled events, which have been enjoyed by some 4,000 people. And he added that “the impact serves to put in check those who were not convinced to celebrate this extraordinary program.”
The actor Juan Carlos Tacoronte starts the activities with a monologue on February 6, at the Dolores Campos-Herrero Municipal Library.
That same day, in the Pérez Galdós House-Museum, the writer and gourmet, José Esteban, will participate in the series Writers who read Galdós with the conference entitled Gastronomy in the work of Galdós. Also at the writer’s house, teacher Gonzalo Pedro Sánchez Eguren will offer the talk on February 13 And Don Benito came to the mountain that will transfer the assistants to 1871, year in which Galdós arrived, for the first time, to Santander, placing his residence in the palace of San Quintín.

The role of women in the work of the Grancanarian writer will be the central theme of the round table that will be held on March 11 at the Benito Pérez Galdós House-Museum. Also, the professor and recent winner of the Comillas Prize, Yolanda Arencibia, will give the conference on March 17, at the Pérez Galdós House-Museum, the conference About the Nobel-fallen-to Galdós.
Bringing the work and life of Galdós to young people is another objective of the commemoration of the centenary of the universal writer, and this is reflected in the different activities dedicated to schoolchildren that will take place in parallel, such as guided tours or the presentation, the March 20 of the book Trafalgar for young people, edited by CanariaseBook.
On March 24, at the House-Museum of the novelist, the writer and member of the Royal Spanish Academy, Carmen Riera, will offer the talk Five reasons to continue reading Galdós that is part of the cycle Writers who read Galdós.
