A North Korean soldier deserts the South across the militarized border

A North Korean soldier defected south today across the eastern side of the militarized border that separates the two countries, the South Korean military said, at the height of détente between Seoul and Pyongyang.

The soldier crossed at 07.56 local time today (22.56 GMT Friday) the demarcation that separates both countries, which continue technically opposed, which is the first desertion since North and South began to reduce their military presence on the border in the framework of the thaw process undertaken at the beginning of the year.

South Korean forces did not detect "any special activity" by the North as a result of the incident, which continues to be investigated, the South Korean Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) said in a statement.
