A new mouth emerges with an ash cloud south of the main cone

A new mouth emerged yesterday between a large cloud of ash and pyroclasts, southeast of the main cone of the La Palma volcano. It did so shortly before 8:00 p.m. yesterday, somewhat separate from the main cone. Scientists insist that this is a normal event in these types of eruptions and that the mouth may well stop emitting pyroclasts within hours or become another hot spot on the volcano, which would change the morphology of the cone.

This new event adds to the monitoring of the laundry, andEspecially the one that flows to the north – going through the town of La Laguna (Los Llanos), with a lower viscosity and therefore much faster than the rest. This lava tongue yesterday skirted the mountain of La Laguna – about 1,500 kilometers away and parallel to that of Todoque – and runs through the banana plantations settled closer to the coast. These days, this tongue of liquid lava has come to drag large blocks of volcanic materials, create lava tsunamis and reach a speed of 250 meters per hour. However, experts see that this laundry is beginning to lose potency.

The number of daily earthquakes is reduced but intense activity continues in depths

“Now it does not run more than 30 meters an hour,” he said. Ruben Fernández, provisional technical director of Pevolca, who explained that the advance of the lava tongues as well as their possible trajectories is being closely followed. By current orography, they hope that all the lava will end up converging in the north, and even, that they can join the languages again on their way to the sea. Likewise, there is a finger that has separated from the stream that is further north, which is now on the Camino Cumplido – still above the mountain of La Laguna – and whose tendency seems to be to also stick to it, Therefore, according to Fernández, it would not affect, in principle, the area located more northwest of La Laguna and, therefore, close to Tazacorte. Fernández explained that these branches of the stream further north of the original one are approximately one kilometer from the coast and that the forecast is that if they reach the sea they will form a new strip. However, experts are also aware that the contribution of magmatic received by the volcano will depend on this, as well as the changes it undergoes in the cone, which are already recurring. “The morphology of the cone is changing and will continue to do so,” stated the director of the National Geographic Institute (IGN), María José Blanco.

In fact, unlike previous days, when the experts considered that the rest of the washes were “practically stopped”, the latest thermal images have shown that there is lava input in all of them. It is not “a great contribution” of material, but there is “a flow that feeds them slowly”, so it “cannot be ruled out” that these other flows undergo a short-term evolution.

Experts hope that the northern languages will come together before reaching the sea

And it is that the eruption is far from over as it still suffers the pressure of the “hundreds of millions of cubic meters of lava” that houses the island inside, as highlighted the professor in geology at the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (ULPGC), José Mangas. Nor is there an indicator that allows announcing the aging and death of the volcano. The seismicity remains –although it is very deep and has decreased compared to previous days–, like the volcanic tremor and the outflow of lava and gases, which means that “the potential of the eruption has not changed,” as Mangas indicates. At the moment, in fact, the volcano is going through a more “effusive” stage of its life, rather than explosive, which means that “less ash” is emitted and there are fewer explosions, as determined by Blanco. And it is that, being a stable strombolian eruption, can go through both “more explosive episodes” like other calmer ones ”, pointed out Mangas.

The earth continues to shake, but yesterday it did so less frequently. The number of earthquakes (a total of 66) means that yesterday was the third calmest day of the last two weeks. However, earthquakes that occur at great depths continue to stand out, since they have such strong energy that, despite the kilometers of distance, they are felt by the entire palm population. The last one with these characteristics happened at eight in the morning yesterday, again in the municipality of Mazo –Which is located on the east side of the island–, with a magnitude of 4.5 and that, again, has been felt throughout the island. Experts highlight this deep seismicity, since it has generated a swarm made up of 12 earthquakes. Like seismicity, there has also been a relative calm in the deformation of the terrain than in the past Thursday it had been detected at the station near Jedey –South of the eruptive centers–. According to the latest data, the five-centimeter deformation located in that area has been reversed. Likewise, as Blanco pointed out, “the rest of the island shows no deformation of any kind.” This circumstance, together with the fact that the seismicity is very deep, suggests to scientists that it is “unlikely” that a new fissure or mouth will emerge far from the main cone.

Meanwhile, the surface devastated by lava flows has already buried 724 hectares of villages in its wake, of which 188 have been crops. According to data from the Cadastre, the wash has affected 992 buildings, of which 809 are homes, 95 tool rooms, 47 industrial buildings, 22 leisure and hospitality centers, 8 buildings for public use and 11 of another type. It has also buried 45,855 meters of road, 66% in Los Llanos. With regard to crops, the majority are banana trees in Tazacorte (76 hectares, which account for 78% of the banana trees affected by the eruption) and vineyards in Los Llanos de Aridane (31 hectares, which account for 62% of the vineyard affected by the eruption). 13.77 hectares of avocado trees have also been affected, the majority in Los Llanos. To a lesser extent, citrus, sweet potato, vegetable, olive, mango and fig plantations have also suffered.

Except for the magmatic rupture near the cone, yesterday’s session was somewhat calmer because the entire neighborhood of La Laguna is already empty. The neighbors who until a few days ago could continue to sleep with some tranquility in their houses have had to abandon them to their fate. In this way, there are already more than 7,000 people who have been forced to move their residence outside the area that the volcano is devastating. TO short term, as Fernández pointed out, no new evacuations are considered, although everything is conditioned to the evolution of the runoffs and the eruptive cone itself. Likewise, the acting Pevolca technical director recalled that of the total evacuees there are only 321 residents in the Fuencaliente Hotel.

meters per hour

  • After traveling at a speed of 250 meters per hour during the night, the northern lava tongue has slowed down and has started to flow at just 30 meters per hour.

  • According to the Cadastre, the number of buildings affected by lava amounts to 992. However, according to Copernicus, this number could rise to 1,600

seismic magnitude

  • Yesterday morning there was one of the strongest tremors to date, of magnitude 4.5 at 36 kilometers deep. The earthquake was felt throughout the island.

  • In the last 24 hours, 66 new earthquakes were reported, which is one of the lowest figures in the last two weeks. Experts expect seismicity to increase

of the banana trees

  • 78% of the affected banana plantations are in the municipality of Tazacorte, where the lava has devastated 76 hectares. In Los Llanos, the most affected crop has been the vineyard.

  • Of the total of 7,000 evacuees, 321 are refugees in the Fuencaliente Hotel. The rest are either in their second home or in the homes of family and friends.
