The popularity of smart assistants continues to grow like foam, even when news that calls into question who listens to the conversations and for what purposes is constantly being published.
The main product of this analysis is precisely the last intelligent assistant of the Internet giant, Google Nest Hub, which is in turn the first one they have developed with a built-in screen (at least, the first to go on sale in Spain).
With Google Assistant
Its functionalities are practically the same as those of smart speakers such as Google Home. Thus, thanks to Google Assistant offers voice access to all Google services: searches, Calendar, Maps … It can be used as a real-time translator, performs simple mathematical calculations, converts units, allows you to check the news, add items to the shopping list, etc. It even includes making calls between two compatible devices (although we miss the presence of a front camera that allows videoconferencing) and the control of smart home devices.
So what is the screen for? Although it is reminiscent of a tablet because of its aesthetics, it is not intended for this use. In fact, it is impossible to run applications when touching on its touch surface: it is mandatory to ask something with the voice. At that time, it shows images that complement the spoken response with which there may be some interaction. An example: when asked what the weather is going to be like during the week, Google Assistant reports temperatures throughout the week while displaying a visual summary. If you click on any of the days, expand the information. In addition, it helps access configuration settings and watch YouTube videos.
And when it's not used …
On the other hand, when it is not being used it is possible to use the screen as a clock (ideal for a bedside table in the bedroom) or as a digital frame. In fact, it is capable of displaying the photographs of our Google Photos albums, allowing us to choose the folders from which we will obtain those images. It is appreciated that this service is not subject to payment subscriptions; something that does happen in similar Amazon devices, which have certain limitations in this use.
One more possibility: as it has integrated Chromecast, it allows you to send content from your smartphone whenever it is compatible, to show photos or videos directly.
The LCD panel, with 7 inches and an adjusted resolution (1,024 x 600 pixels), is displayed correctly. To this collaborate some very intense colors and a level of brightness that guarantees that it looks perfectly even in very bright rooms. In addition, it incorporates a sensor that optimally detects changes in the light to adapt the screen; During the night it dims the brightness enough so that it does not disturb when used in the bedroom.
The sensations regarding the sound are not so positive. Not bad considering the size of the speaker and it is enough to watch videos on YouTube and listen to music if it is not very demanding, but its location on the back of the Nest Hub makes the acoustics not always the best.
Finally, we talk about how ‘listen’ and when. It has 2 quite sensitive microphones that work well in environments with ambient noise and several meters away. We have only had a problem to understand us while playing music or watching videos at a high volume.
It is possible to silence them manually through a switch located at the rear, which disconnects them completely. It is almost his only physical button: he only adds the volume control.
