The representative of the Cuban movement Damas de Blanco in the US, Blanca Reyes, today denounced the "cruelty" of the Cuban Government before the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) and asked for help to free five other women from her organization. they are imprisoned.
Reyes made that request during a hearing of the 169th session of the IACHR, held at the University of Colorado, in the municipality of Boulder (USA).
"In Cuba there is a special sign of cruelty of the totalitarian Communist Government against the entire female mass and, in particular, against the Ladies in White," he said.
"Women who belong to that organization," he added, "are called to prison, they directly suffer the threat of being taken to a cell, they are imposed heavy fines for their public activities and their families, including their children, are also victims of unpunished behavior. of the political police. "
The activist said that five white women are currently in prison in a preventive manner or for having received a final judgment.
Those inmates are Martha Sánchez González, Nieves Matamoros, Aimara Nieto Muñoz, Yolanda Santana Ayala and Xiomara de las Mercedes Cruz Miranda.
The audience was not attended by any representative of the Cuban government, which does not recognize the competence of the Commission since it belongs to the Organization of American States (OAS), to which Cuba refuses to reintegrate after the organism lifted its suspension in 2009
Cuba, member of the OAS since its creation in 1948, was suspended in 1962 after the triumph of the Revolution led by Fidel Castro due to its adhesion to Marxism-Leninism in the framework of the Cold War between the capitalist bloc led by the United States. . and the communist led by the Soviet Union.
Commissioner Joel Hernández García considered it "sad" not to be able to hear any explanation from the Cuban authorities and expressed his wish that the island be reinstated in the inter-American law system as soon as possible, especially after the "light beam" of the Summit of the Americas.
Cuba attended the Summit of the Americas for the first time in 2015, in which the OAS countries participate.
