The Court of Contentious Administrative Number 1 of Segovia will have to decide whether to place a statue of the imp that, according to the legend, The Segovian Aqueduct in a single night supposes an attack on religious sentiment, as denounced by a group of neighbors. The controversy has been cooking for weeks in the capital of Segovia after the artist José Antonio Abella and businessman José Luis Herrero de Andrés donated to the city the allegorical bronze sculpture, 1.7 meters high, for placement in a wall of the street of San Juan, to which the Local Government Board agreed.
However, a group of neighbors felt offended by the initiative and decided to file a lawsuit before the Segovian court for feeling that it affects their "religious feeling", so the judge has offered the City Council the possibility of presenting allegations.
The mayor of Segovia, Clara Luquero (PSOE), announced Thursday that they will present a brief before the Court to defend the placement of this statue of the imp. In a press conference, Luquero has assured that the City Council has "absolute authority" to accept this donation from the creators of the work, who have also offered to assume the cost of its placement, so that the councilor of Historical Heritage and Tourism, Claudia de Santos, has highlighted the "generosity, innocence and normality" of both, while lamented that they are being subject to "derision."
The councilor stressed that this piece "does not intend to be a brainy and boring history lesson, but a nod to the legend of the Aqueduct" which, as explained, is part of the intangible heritage of Segovia. The sculpture represents an imp that sits on the wall of San Juan Street and uses a pair of pliers to hold a granite ashlar, with a "sympathetic" tone far from the terrifying visions of medieval iconography: "He is a smiling and plump devil, even the mockery, very far from a sinister demon with which to frighten children, "the councilor argued.
The author of the work has added a mobile phone, with which the devil himself is taking a picture with his work, the Aqueduct, in the background. This fact supposes an invitation for the tourists to be photographed next to the statue and a nod that allows the sculptor and the visitor to record their affection towards the city of Segovia, since the inscription "I love Segovia. "
