A walk through the inspiring corners of Triana and Vegueta that forged the character of the young Benito Pérez Galdós in the city that saw him be born, the first in Europe founded outside the continent, is the next guided tour organized by the Cabildo de Gran Canaria to spread the figure of this famous grancanario in the centenary of his death.
Alejandro García, architect of the Cabildo de Gran Canaria, and Octavio Rodríguez, historian of Tibicenas, will guide the group through the steps of the chronicler and stop at the corners that are part of the project ‘Intervention in the urban landscape of the City of Galdós’, which since 2013 that allows visitors to find in their path words of the writer carved in stone and bronze.
The visit will begin in the church of San Francisco, where Don Benito was baptized and where the feeling that his bells produced was engraved: “His son would distinguish him from a hundred to ring at a time.”
And it is that “on this visit we want the city to be personified, to look at the buildings to see their style, to know that he told Galdós at a time that inspired him so much. We will read the city,” said the architect.
The stone bridge that Galdós crossed so many times, and of which only the four statues representing the stations are preserved today, will also be a crossing point that will allow us to contemplate some of the 1,200 cataloged buildings that have preserved these neighborhoods since the late fifteenth century to the XX.
Another great stop will be before the Hermitage of San Antonio Abad, epicenter of the foundation of the city, with its inscription “€ the stones speak, that translating of its language is the task in which we have embarked”, which encloses the spirit of the own tour, which will lead to read in its architecture some of the conversations that the city had with the boy Benito and some of the teachings he gave to the boy Galdós.
It is therefore a unique and unforgettable opportunity to follow in the footsteps of Galdós with four free visits of 30 seats for each next February 13, 15, 20 and 22. Registration will be on February 10 and 11 through the web https://visitas.grancanariapatrimonio.com or in person at the Cabildo Office of Citizen Attention from 8.30 am
These visits are part of the set of actions programmed by the Historical Heritage dissemination unit to publicize the wealth of Gran Canaria and raise awareness of its heritage values. The occasion of Benito Pérez Galdós comes after the successful reception of the visits by the recesses of San Juan and San Francisco, and by the majestic Barranco de Guayadeque. The next visits will take 240 people to the adventures of Mata Castle and the colorful Perojo street.
