A fantastic and plural woman | Culture

Carmen Alborch, on the International Day of Working Women in Valencia, in 1994.

We have lost a great person. A fantastic and plural woman, capable of developing activities of the most varied throughout his life. Carmen Alborch she has been a university professor, cultural promoter and always active in politics. She has also been a successful writer and, since her youth, a convinced feminist.

Carmen Alborch was a defender of women's rights since the seventies, when that was not common in our country. And it has continued to be when feminism has fully entered the political agenda. To a large extent, the advance of feminist ideas in Spain we owe, and we have to thank, women like Carmen Alborch.

In all the incarnations of his biography he was exceptional. At the University of Valencia, as well as Professor of Administrative Law, she was dean of the Faculty of Law for a few years. As a writer she has published, with great success, a series of books that can be highlighted Alone, Bad and Free, three essays on the female social position in which she defends new frontiers of action for what women want to achieve.

Carmen Alborch always defended the need for women to join politics, to develop a new kind of power and leadership. He said: "When a woman enters politics, women change, when many women enter, politics changes".

In the cultural field, Carmen Alborch was everything. First, General Director of Culture of the Valencian Government, later director of the IVAM, the Valencian Center for Modern Art, and later Minister of Culture. As minister, she proposed to "revive the culture". He came with a modern and groundbreaking spirit and dedicated himself to supporting the audiovisual sector. Positive and combative, he did not let himself be intimidated by having a low budget and marked as one of his priorities the Prado Museum, which he defined as a "patrimony of all Spaniards". Under his mandate began the renovation and expansion works that have been so beneficial.

Carmen Alborch has been deputy and senator for 13 years, member of the Equality Committee of the Congress and the Senate, in a few legislatures in which transcendental laws have been passed to advance the rights of women in our country.

In her political work, she had the aspiration to be mayor of Valencia, but she did not succeed. However, from that campaign was a magnificent book: The city and life. It is a book full of passion in which he mixes his memories with the history of the city, his eras of the university and the struggles against the dictatorship, his political and academic experiences. And remember the friends who were victims of ETA's intolerance and terrorism: Ernest Lluch, Manuel Broseta and Tomas y Valiente. It is a deep and agile book, which reaches the bottom of the topics and knows how to make them attractive. It is a book about the city of Valencia and, at the same time, about your life experience. Talk about making Valencia more beautiful, more important and more cosmopolitan. And, at the same time, more supportive and more attentive to all its people, its neighborhoods and its traditions.

In addition to working in all these fields, Carmen Alborch has been a supportive woman, who has always supported the most progressive causes, a good friend of her friends and someone she could always count on. Carmen Alborch was always a fighter, optimist and positive. Always looking for the best in their collaborators and their friends. That's why he had so many and knew how to bring out the best in everyone. We can not forget it.

Inés Alberdi She is Professor of Sociology at the Complutense University of Madrid.
