One of the two key complainants of the case for sexual abuse against producer Harvey Weinstein in New York reported on Monday, in tears, how the Hollywood businessman allegedly assaulted and raped her twice when she was a production assistant in her twenties in 2006.
Miriam “Mimi” Haley, formerly surnamed Haleyi, 42, is one of the star witnesses of the trial because her accusations against Weinstein, among those of a hundred women, have resulted in the imputation of the producer in the Big Apple, where He is accused of five sexual crimes and faces a possible life sentence.
Haley met Weinstein in 2004 at the European premiere of the movie “The Aviator” and, later, after meeting him again at the Cannes Festival in 2006, she was hired as an assistant in a well-known American television contest that he produced in New York , “Project Runway”.
The witness, sitting on the stage next to Judge James Burke and a few meters away from Weinstein, explained to the jurors that after that contact in Cannes, before hiring her, he invited her to his hotel and asked for a massage , something she rejected, feeling humiliated.
When she was already working for him, the producer invited her to go to a fashion show in Paris, something she did not accept, and continued trying to approach her to the point of presenting herself by surprise at her home, at which point she told him she had heard rumors about his “terrible reputation with women” and he seemed offended.
Haley, who told the Prosecutor’s Office that he had no romantic or sexual interest in Weinstein, reported that on the day the first sexual assault allegedly occurred, the defendant sent him a driver to take her to what she thought would be a meeting on professional matters in his apartment in Soho (Manhattan).
The then production assistant recalled that they were chatting on the couch when he pounced on her trying to kiss her, and when she got up to get away, he grabbed her and pushed her to a room, immobilized her on the bed and made oral sex to the strength.
The witness insisted Weinstein to stop, told him that he was menstruating and tried to get up repeatedly but he ignored it, and then he thought: “They are raping me”, after what he felt in “shock”, he saw himself without escape and endured the aggression, which is described in the prosecution’s prosecution document.
A few weeks later, Haley met again with the producer in a hotel in Tribeca (Manhattan) and, according to his story, when he entered his room he took her hand and led her to the bed, where he stayed ” paralyzed “while raping her and calling her” slut and whore “.
The witness burst into tears and remembered that she felt “idiot” because she had made it clear that she did not want to meet with him anymore and, although she said that in the alleged first aggression she did not feel “guilty”, in the second she thought that there was no “fought enough”.
Weinstein’s defense argued that there was inconsistency between the story and some of the woman’s messages dated in 2008, two years after those meetings, in which she treated him with affection, but she said she maintained contact in case professional opportunities arose.
Haley’s crude testimony follows that of actress Annabella Sciorra, who took the stand last Thursday, and another four women who have accused the producer of sexual abuse are still expected to testify, including the second complainant of the case, the aspiring actress Jessica Mann.
