60% of consumers do not know if they have contracted the electricity supply in the regulated or free market, while in the case of natural gas it reaches 68%, according to data from the Household Panel of the National Commission of Markets and Competition (CNMC).

However, the degree of knowledge between the free market and the regulated market has increased 5 percentage points in the last year. Thus, 3 out of 10 households claimed to know the difference between the free market and the regulated electricity market.

These data collected by the body chaired by Cani Fernández correspond to the second quarter of this year, before the entry into force of the new electricity bill.

With regard to the power contracted per household, 22% of households do not know what power they have. 39.5% claim to have a power of between 4 to 6 kilowatts (kW) and 31%, between 0 and 3 kW.

In addition to the contracted power in the electricity supply, another important aspect is the hourly discrimination. Before the changes in the toll structure took place, regarding the type of electricity pricing, one in four households had hourly pricing with a digital meter, while 20% had hourly rate pricing (price in two or three time slots). 34% say they do not know what rate they have contracted.

In addition, almost seven out of ten households with hourly discrimination in their electricity tariff took the prices of the different time bands into account in their consumption habits, such as when turning on the washing machine or heating.

On the other hand, only 21% of households with an hourly rate without hourly discrimination took hourly prices into account in their consumption habits.

Almost a third of households are unaware of the existence of the social bonus and among those who do know it, 35% say they do not know the requirements to benefit from it. Although they are high percentages, since 2017 they have been reduced by 17 and 6 points, respectively.

The data from the CNMC Household Panel have also looked at electricity self-consumption, where only 4.7% of households have a self-production system of electricity, either from the home or from the community.
